Digital and Offset Printing – Which is Better?

Tuesday, April 30th, 2019

You must have heard of the terms digital and offset printing, but don’t know which type is best suited for your requirements! Rest assured, this is a common dilemma faced by many, as they don’t have a clearer insight regarding the differences of the two techniques.

What is Offset Printing?

Plates made of aluminum are used to transfer an image onto a rubber blanket, which is then rolled onto a sheet of paper. The ink isn’t transferred directly, but color reproduction is excellent. Offset presses can run competently once they are set up, so more quantities can be printed if needed.

  • Printing in large quantities is much more cost-effective – in fact, the more you print, the lower is the “price per piece”.
  • You can use several paper types, along with custom finishes of your choice.
  • If you want to include special custom inks such as metallic and Pantone colors, that is possible too.
  • Crisp color fidelity, while detailing is fantastic – this is premium quality printing with a clean, professional look.

What is Digital Printing?

This method doesn’t involve plates, but uses toner or liquid ink. This option works well when lower quantities are needed – say, 25 greeting cards or 120 pamphlets.  It has variable data capability, so when each piece needs a unique code, name or address, digital is the best option. Unfortunately, offset printing can’t be tweaked to perform this functionality.

  • Installation costs are lower for short runs.
  • You can print only the amount as and when needed.
  • Minimum quantities are actually lower.
  • Black and white digital printing costs less.
  • Data capability is variable.
  • The quality is exceptional due to the advent of cutting-edge technology.

Which type of printing is best for your project?

Both methods are great, but the requirements have to be taken into account. For instance, if you need higher volume printing that goes up to hundreds or thousands, or you have to use specific, brand-centric Pantone color, it is best to go for offset printing that is economical at 1000+ identical copies. As mentioned, specialty ink and custom papers can be utilized too. If you need short run printing of less than 100 or up to 500 copies (begins at one single copy), or individual addresses or information, then digital is a more lucrative solution.

If you are confused about which printing method to choose, please go ahead and seek professional advice.

Web Designer and Web Developer – What is the Difference?

Tuesday, April 9th, 2019

Even though the term web designer and developer are used interchangeably, because both assist in building websites, their areas of involvement are different. Developers focus on code structure using complex languages, while designers concentrate on structuring the site in a more visually creative manner.

What is a web designer?
To put it in a nutshell, the job of web designers is to make the site look interesting to users via compelling images, videos, animation, etc. Code like HTML and CSS are used to create designs. There are various types of designers:
laptop-designer-table• User Experience (UX) – Using research into user’s demographics and website needs, along with prototype testing and site restructuring, these designers keep visitors engaged.
• User Interface (UI) – They work on improving how users interact with website interface. They make the site more enjoyable and convenient to navigate.
• Visual – This is a blend of UX and UI creative and coding skills are used, while design issues are resolved as well. They define the uniqueness of a brand.

What is web developer?

A web developer works on the framework of a website by using software like Javascript and JQuery – it is just like building a foundation. There are categories of developers such as:
• Back-end – It involves designing core structure with complex software languages like Java, SQL and C#. Coding is done on web servers and databases, not on the browser. Bugs are fixed by them as well.
• Front-end – These designers use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for client-side development. They work on things the user can see like client lead forms.
• Full stack – They are involved across multiple stacks including both front and back end. Their expertise includes all areas of web development.

Do you need a web designer or a web developer?

The answer depends on what kind of website related work you have to get done. For instance, designing a new homepage layout or editing videos and photos is the job of a web designer, while building new contract forms or creating mobile apps is when you require web developers.
But if you are creating a website from ground zero, you need to hire a designer and developer. The latter creates a solid platform for further growth in future, while the former makes it more aesthetically appealing for users so they visit the website and spend significant time on it. It is advisable to approach an agency that offers services of both designers and developers.

Blind Embossing – What You Need to Know

Friday, November 23rd, 2018

Embossing is a common technique used to make images more appealing to the viewer. The paper surface is pushed forward using an embossing die to cause a raised image. Blind embossing falls under this category – it creates a raised area using a die, and thus generates a subtle paper colored image that can be felt as well as seen.

What is blind embossing?

It is quite similar to the printing technique of die stamping or engraved printing. Instead of ink, the image is created by forcing the machine to push the paper into the metal die so it leaves a raised impression. The highlights and shadows define the typography or graphic. It essentially creates both tactile and visual appeal. It is especially effective when a subtly elegant, three dimensional image is needed.

Types of embossing dies

Embossing dies come in several different styles, each with its own unique appearance – take a look:

Flat

Using this, you can create a three-dimensional image that is raised above the paper surface. The edges are straight, so it produces the most accurate reproduction of black and white line art.

Round

It gives a curved image as the paper surface curves out.

Beveled

The image has sloping slides so you can get a deeper impression.

Sluptured

You can create real dimension by forming the paper to several layers.

Points to remember about Blind Embossing

  • The embossing style for a project depends on the effect you wish to achieve.
  • Size, boldness, and intricacy of the design are important as bolder type and larger designs can be embossed more deeply.
  • Bulk of paper stock used is a vital aspect as heavier papers can achieve greater depth and detail.
  • Use textured paper stocks or laid sheets because they are more effective, as blind embossing basically flattens the paper in the embossed area, so the overall contrast is quite interesting.
  • Line art and typography for embossing should be proofed at reproduction size; care must be taken in spacing type so that letters have room to form.
  • Since an embossed image is three-dimensional, it may appear slightly smaller than the same image produced by offset or other two-dimensional means. To compensate for this optical illusion, artwork may be prepared slightly bolder or at a slightly larger size.

Applications of blind embossing are vast as it can be used on a large array of different papers and card to generate sophisticated artwork that can be seen and felt.
