Is the customer always right?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

I used to think so – that the customer is always right. However, after 6 years in business, I have realised that try as you may to comprehend their needs, some individuals just have unattainable rationales.

Citing some examples, a client signed on the final artwork on the design project, but later expressed disagreement over the printing price. Ultimately, the client refused to pay for the design fees and argued for the project to be cancelled. In another scenario, a client approved the initial design and all pages were designed and completed. When payment was to be addressed and agreed upon however, the client mentioned that his boss did not approve the inital design and concept to start with.

I’m not saying that I’m right all the time, but neither am I unreasonable. Aren’t projects should only proceed when given the ‘go ahead’ by the bosses. Of course, I do agree that staffs want to prove their capabilities to their bosses too. However, showing the boss the completed artwork 6 months after the invoice has been issued; is that fair to us now? We tried to work it out with the client together, suggesting an alternative design concept in hopes of making the situation better. However, improving the situation is impossible when we failed to reach the client either via phone or email.

We value all our clients and hope to be able to work together to create the best experience for each and every one. Regardless of whether our efforts bear fruit, I can only say; we’ve tried our best.

Thinking out of the box?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

One often feels the need to have ‘think out of the box’ ideas when suggestions start getting stale and analogous, also breeding frustration and lack of productivity as there is a darth of new ideas.

Thinking out of the box is more than just innovative new ideas; it is thinking unconventionally from a new perspective. More importantly, providing creative ideas that work.

However, there are a few factors we must bear in mind before thinking out of the box – and easy as it may be to pen these few points, it is unfortunate that we may not be able to do so in every situation due to the limitations that may be present in each situation.

For clients, associates, and everyone in general:
How willing are you to accept new ideas and perspectives?
Staff may be willing to accept new changes, but bear in mind that projects are unable to proceed without the approval go-ahead by bosses.
On top of willingness, how feasible are these ideas? Will they incorporate well into your project or other projects that are concurrently running?
One needs to ensure that every step and procedure will aid the complete project and fall nicely in place.
Will the new ideas conform to the company’s corporate identity and add value to your plans?
The boss’s approval must be sought before radical changes are made, otherwise it may result in double work for staff.

To sum it up, thinking out of the box and coming up with ingenious solutions may be novel and a breath of fresh air. However, what is more important is the openess and willingness of both parties to communicate and rise up to the challenge of coming to an agreement between what works, and what appeals.

Design Workz promise to work hand in hand with our clients and partners to achieve that delicate balance, and would greatly appreciate your alliance.

Communication is Key to a Good Marketing Campaign

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Given the hustle and bustle of everyday life, most of us forge ahead trying to complete as many tasks as we are assigned to do; all within a stipulated time frame. How many of us have – and can afford to; slow down and listen, instead of hear what the other party is saying? In our fast paced society, too many of us take communication for granted, not realizing how essential it is to everyday life.

Design Workz stresses that communication is crucial – it can in fact make or break a marketing campaign.

So what exactly is communication? Broadly defined, communication can be the mutual exchange of thoughts, messages, beliefs, ideas, speech, or even behaviour. Most importantly, good communication only takes place when the other partly effectively comprehends what is trying to be communicated, also bearing in mind that communication can take place through various techniques and methods. It is indeed unfortunate that some people rush through life to the extent that their eyes might be fixed on you but their minds are a-wandering, they may nod along to your ideas yet not fully comprehend, hear; but not listen.

Design Workz emphasizes on communication as we believe that two-way communication is not only necessary in the exchange of feedback and opinions, it is vital in businesses and even everyday life.

Design Workz promises to listen, comprehend and understand the needs of our customers to bring about a smooth and pleasant working relationship.

An innovation way to a normal procedure?

Monday, October 25th, 2010

We all know that when we are on the plane, the flight attendants will all inform us of the safety features and procedure to take note when we are on board. However as it is usually typical and boring, we usually do not take note of it at all.. until Cebu Pacific came up with something new this time round. Can I say say that it is an innovative way to beat daily routine?

I think I can safely say not just the passengers, even the flight attendants will be excited to present their dance routine. It is not only a win-win situation which attracts the attention of the passengers, and also brings up the morale of the staffs.

How can you add that little bit of spice to your daily work rountine? It can just be a simple change but can bring about amazing effect. Lastly, do have a pleasant flight if you are flying soon…

HTC Flash Mob Dance | Raffles Place

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

This is an event by HTC on 23th October 2009 at Raffles Place. Seeing the scale of event, you will know to put off something like this is no easy feat. To ordinate with the number of dancers is already the first headache. I heard they are about 200 of them coming from NTU that make this slightly easier since you can work around their studying time and etc. Secondly is the venue, with so many dancers, you need to clear off certain area to pull this off. Hosting it at Raffles Place and during lunch time where people walk in and out while they are dancing? Who will think of that? Then again, that is the whole purpose, to dance during lunch time where the people are out from their offices being entertained with a pleasant surprise.

Not only that, there is no uniform or a particular dressing involved, how are you going to recognise them when they are all out there? Only thing is to open your eyes big big? That is what they are trying to bring the message across probably? A re-branding campaign to say their handphone are hip and popular across all ages? From students to working professionals? Some details I spotted are: some dancers are holding to HTC phones while dancing and flashing them occasionally (Subconscious marketing?), at the end, most of them left while bringing out their handphone pretending to be chatting on phones?

Lastly, enjoy… BTW, did I mention they stop at 1? Good things must shared around right? They did another in Wisma Atria the following day.

Brochure for Safe Keeping?

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Most people do know of the need to get brochures and / or other marketing materials to advertise about their company’s products and services. If you have already done so, that is a good start. However, what are you supposed to do with the marketing materials after printing it? Sadly, I have heard of clients who still possessed copies of their brochures from as long as 3 years ago! Surprising? Not really. No doubt, they have taken the first step to advertise, but they did not know how to go about disseminating the message across to the target audience and thus ended up with stacks of brochures which are collecting dust, as time goes by.

From my point of view as I always told them, by keeping the marketing materials in their warehouses or store rooms, no one would know about the products and services that they are providing except themselves. Instead, if they were to tap on their immediate social network and begin by distributing it to their friends, relatives or people from the same industry, it would be a great avenue to start advertising for their company. In addition, it may also bring them potential leads if it somehow reaches their target audience. How is that possible, you ask? That is because, you would never know what really happens after each individual receives your brochure. Some may dump it into the bin and there may be yet some others who may pass it to people whom they think would need your products and services. You would never know if you don’t give it a try. Anyway, it beats leaving the brochures to collect dust in your warehouse, doesn’t it? So, take that chance and start distributing it today instead of safe keeping it…

Start Marketing NOW!

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Now is the opportune time for you to work on intensive marketing. Why did I say that? Today, we are facing an economic downturn, every company is cutting costs or retrenching staff. When your existing clients are also cutting costs and buying lesser from you, what have you got left? Answer: You will have lesser sales and a lower profit margin.

Procrastinate no more and begin your marketing strategies now as there is no point blaming the economy, your destiny and whatever comes to mind. Discuss with your team and work out new strategies to retain existing clients and also attract potential ones. Look through your marketing materials again; get prepared, get trained such that you are ready when the opportunity comes knocking on your door.

Think about it, when all your competitors are cutting cost in terms of marketing and whatnots, it is in fact, the best time for you to enter the playing field (e.g. through more attractive marketing strategies) for you are bound to shine amongst the other competitors and emerge as the victorious one!
